Slow Job Market Leads to High Volume of 'Teach for America' Applications
7/12/2010

According to a July 11, 2010 article from The New York Times, the volume of applicants for the 'Teach for America' program increased by 32% from 2009 to 2010. 'Teach for America' is a nonprofit program that trains individuals to teach in public schools that are located in high-poverty areas. The article indicates that the current economy and slow job market is contributing to the program's popularity among college graduates, since those who are accepted receive a two-year assignment and are paid the same salary as beginning teachers in the districts where they are placed. While the program is very popular among those seeking teaching positions, some education experts are concerned that the majority of participants leave the teaching profession within six years.

The article is available at the Web site of The New York Times.
