Students Benefit From Longer School Days
3/19/2010

An opinion piece written by Mark Feinberg, cofounder of the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP), questions action being taken in several states to shorten the school week in response to budgetary concerns.  Stating the belief that to "take away time" is to "take away learning", Feinberg supports expanding both the school day and week to allow more instructional time for children.  Feinberg contends that schools which have added learning time have seen a positive impact on their students, with the achievement of higher standards, in some cases improving at double the state rate in English and math.

KIPP is a network of 82 high-performing charter schools serving 21,000 children in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade in 19 states.
