As reported in an Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) Press Release, enrollment at Illinois' community colleges increased 7.8% this semester over spring, 2009, an all-time record. This semester's headcount is at more than 390,000 students, which is also an increase over the preceding fall semester.
In addition to the record number of enrollments, more students than ever are taking full-time course loads as well. According to Guy H. Alongi, Chairman of the ICCB, "Not only do we have record numbers of students, but they are taking record numbers of classes."
The continuing poor economy and resulting loss of jobs are seen as contributing factors to the increases.
