Play Time Important Component of Children's Healthy Development
11/19/2008

According to a November 18, 2008 article from The Associated Press, children need to be allowed ample time to play in order to be healthy and develop important social skills. Playing fosters creative thinking skills, which today's children will need when they are adults competing in the global market. Experts estimate that, since the 1980s, the average American child has between 8 and 12 fewer hours of free play time per week. Some believe the reduction in play time is a contributing factor to high obesity rates, as well as increases in anxiety and depression, among children.

The article is available at the MSNBC Web site.
